GoDaddy Denial of Service (DOS) Attacks May 4
Two of my websites hosted through GoDaddy were down starting this morning at about 9AM PST until about 2PM PST. I contacted support numerous times and they were a bit vague about the issues. That is until I got this email message from GoDaddy support:
On May 4th, some of our services came under significant and sustained distributed denial of service attacks resulting in intermittent disruptions of various services, including shared hosting and email.
After intermittent disruptions of various services including shared hosting and email, the attack was contained.
We have made and will continue to make significant investments in our information security infrastructure to protect from these shifting types of attacks.
So if you were having issues with some of your GoDaddy websites check and see if they are back up. It always worries me when this happens and is super inconvenient because customers also get screwed which means … yep I hear about it … a lot. I have been otherwise happy with GoDaddy’s services but we will see how things progress now that they seem to be a target.
If your hosts were hit also let me know, it would be interested to get a handle on the real scope of the attacks. Of my 10 or so hosted domains with GoDaddy I saw issues with 4 of them. The problems were at first sloooowwww response then any pages with PHP content would crash with a 500 error.
I checked out their hosting blog and general information but couldn’t really find anything about this. Of course I am at the webvisions conference in Portland, OR right now so the whole messing with toasted hosting has been a pain and I haven’t had a ton of time to sleuth around.
