I recently purchased a Novatel XUA-1 which is an adapter which takes an Express Card to a USB connection. I have Verizon Wireless’s EVDO Wireless Broadband Access service which I access from my Mac Book Pro laptop. When I signed up for the service, I purchased a Express Card Wireless Modem to allow me access to the Verizon Wireless EVDO signal.

The modem I have is the Verizon Wireless v640 Express Card which happens to be made by Novatel. The problem with a Express Card EVDO modem is that it can only be used in a laptop and specifically a laptop with the newer Express Card slot. The Mac Book Pro’s have this slot as do many newer Windows laptops but older laptops have PCMICA slots. When my Mac Book Pro had to go into the shop it left me without internet access.

Novatel XUA-1 Wireless Express Card to USB Adapter The solution I found to my lack of Express Card slot was fairly inexpensive and amazingly simple. I purchased a Novatel XUA Wireless Express Card to USB Adapter from MobilePlanet. The Express Card to USB adapter was $53.95 + S/H. The Novatel XUA-1 was designed specifically as a solution for people with the need to access EVDO wireless high speed internet using a Express Card but lacking an Express Card slot on their laptop or from a PC. The Express Card to USB adapter is a small hardware device that has a slot for the Express Card and two USB connectors. The adapter will function if one USB connection is used or functions at higher power and thus better reception if you use both USB cables.

I pulled the XUA-1 out of the bubble wrap and plugged it in. Believe it or not it worked … perfectly. Doubly unbelievable is that it worked perfectly in both my iMac Apple system and my Windows XP computer. All I had to do was install the necessary Verizon Wireless VZAccess software and then plug in the Express Card to USB adapter with the V640 modem in place when the install asked for it. This was the case for both Mac and PC installs. The Novatel XUA-1 adapter comes with no software because none is necessary. The XUA-1 has all the necessary functionality built into its firmware so the translation from Express Card to USB is seamless.

I only have the V640 EVDO Express Card modem so I can’t speak to its use with other cards but according to its data sheet it “permits customers to use Novatel Wireless Broadband ExpressCards, which include the Merlin™ XU870, V640 and V740.” The data sheet also seems to indicate that the adapter has a broader use for all Express Cards but since my V740 is my only Express Card I haven’t done any further testing.

I can now take my Express Card EVDO modem from Mac Book Pro laptop to Windows XP box to iMac Desktop seamlessly. With both USB connectors plugged in, I have seen very good signal strength and connection speeds. I am extremely happy with the Novatel XUA-1 Wireless Express to USB adapter and would highly recommend it to anyone with EVDO service who is looking to expand the usefulness of their service.
