Synopsis: Don’t buy the Case Mate iPhone 3G case as it can seriously scratch the back of your iPhone.

The Full Story: My wife and I recently got iPhone 3G’s and are very excited about the phones. Not wanting to damage our shiny new expensive phones, we purchased two Case Mate Naked Cases for the iPhone 3G on the recommendation of Cali Lewis’s review of the Case Mate Naked Case for the first gen iPhone. We slipped or shiny new phones right into their naked cases in the Apple Store.

The phones come out of their cases each night when they sleep in our JVC dual iPhone dock (review to come later but it is awesome). Anyways we picked our phones up on August 26th (day our Verizon contract expired). In September I noticed a few scratches on the back of my phone. I was really confused as the phone lives in the case except at night when it is in the dock and I couldn’t figure out how it got scratched.

Cut to a few weeks later when I noticed the scratches were getting progressively worse. Then I checked out my wife’s phone and bingo hers has identical scratches! Since the back of the phone never touches the dock the only thing they have in common is the Case Mate Naked Case. Taking a closer look at the engineering of the case it looks as if the tab that locks the two pieces together scratches on the back of the phone as it is pulled apart or put back together. If you run your finger along the case it feels a bit scratchy and with the new plastic back of the phone the combination creates scratches on the iPhone 3G.

The first gen iPhone was aluminum so it would not have been easily scratched by a plastic tab of the Case Mate Naked Case. We are VERY VERY careful with our phones and I can see no way we could be causing this via mis-use. If this scratching is the result of normal use then that is even more unacceptable.

Final review: The Case Mate Naked Case is a DON’T BUY. It protects the phone very well but in the process scratches your phone every time you take it in and out. If you use a dock you have to pull the phone out of the case this may lead to scratching. For

Resolution: Sadly not good. I recently emailed Case Mate to let them know about this and try to get some resolution. My complete email exchange with them is below along with the pictures I sent. Anyways short story is they said too bad and shove it since I must have abused or misused the naked case.

There response was a caned quote out of their legal agreement and completely unacceptable. Once again a company chooses to give a customer the finger instead of trying to help them. What did I ask for? Either a replacement case if they felt ours was just defective since we were some of the first to get them (we pre-ordered) or exchange it with a different case/combination that would appropriate this. IE: a screen protector and leather case.

For nearly $40 + shipping and handling each I would think they would be a bit more willing to help out their customers. At least some attempt at a discourse and resolution would have been helpful but they instead chose to give me a caned response. They left me with no recourse but to write up my dissatisfaction on my blog and send my experiences into the blog’o-sphere for others to be warned not to buy the Case Mate Naked Case.

Subject: Iphone 3g Naked Case – Scratching iPhone

Hello,

We have two Naked Cases (for my wife and my iPhone 3G’s). We love the
functionality of the case but have a major issue with them as they have
caused both of our iPhone’s to be scratched.

I have attached pictures of the scratching on my phone. I know it is
impossible to prove to you that I didn’t scratch it some how else but I hope
I can try as I think this is a design flaw that could cause issues. We
placed our phones in our Naked Cases at the Apple Store. The phones come out
of the cases every night and go into our dual docking station for the night.
Then in the morning both phones go back into the cases.

There is identical scratching on both my wife and my phones (both black mine
16G and hers 8G). I can only guess that the closure tab on the back side of
the cases causes the scratching when the case is removed/replaced or both.

I am really worried that this kind of scratching will lead to my iPhone
warranty being voided because again it looks like the phones have been slid
on the concrete.

We pre-ordered our cases and we were some of the first to get them (as they
didn’t even come with “real” packaging just a note from Case Mate saying
they wanted to ship as soon as possible and didn’t want to wait for the
fancy packaging to delay our order). I really like the integrated screen
protector and fairly slim profile of the case but the scratching is a HUGE
issue.

I am not sure the best way to remedy the situation. We do enjoy the cases
but not sure we can keep using them since they continue to gouge the back of
our phones. If you have found this to be a problem with a certain run of the
cases etc please let me know and we would be willing to swap for a new
version. Otherwise, I suppose we could try another case but none of the
others seem to have the full protection of the Naked Case.

Thanks,

Richard Sipe

Here is a free Adobe Illustrator CS3 formatted SD Card vector illustration. Nothing special or fancy here but the file is something I drew real quickly for a project and I figured may be helpful for others to save a bit of time.

Enjoy.

My employer needed someone to fly down to Phoenix, AZ for some work. I volunteered so I could combine it into a chance to head over to the Grand Canyon to see Carmen. I flew down from Portland to Phoenix in the early morning on Friday. It was a warm 101 in Phoenix and I really was not impressed with the city. Just way to brown, hot, and busy for a small town Northwest guy.

After finishing up my work I drove up to the Grand Canyon and Carmen’s house. It was really great to hang out and spend some time with her. She had just picked up her new puppy Artemis and it was fun to see a cute puppy again since mine is now 75lbs.

Saturday Carmen and I headed down into the Canyon for a hike to Horseshoe Mesa. It was quite the trip. Hot. Steep. and Rocky. Just what you think hiking in the Grand Canyon would be. We walked to the Horseshoe Mesa old mining area and then all the way to the end of the Mesa. We had a nice lunch and cooled down a bit … a bit it was still hot hot after all. There was thunder clouds all day and we were afraid, and kind of hopeful really, that we were going to get soaked with a Arizona thunderstorm. It started to drizzle during our lunch so we decided to head up the canyon. Well, we got NO rain but we did have a “nice” walk back.

Turns out, though, my 10 year old boots couldn’t handle the canyon. My boot sole started coming off and by a bit up the mountain was completely about to come off. Not wanting to go barefoot up the canyon wall Carmen and I managed to fashion a fix out of an eyeglasses string. We made it up in really good time even though my legs were dying by the top. Once we made it to the tourists with flip flops and white pants we knew we were right at the top!

The next day I had sore calves and some HUGE blisters but a good set of achievement. Carmen and I took a drive out to the end of the Park and the tower out there. Then we took a little walk to a semi-secret point that is one of Carmen’s favorites. Check out our picture gallery for my pictures from the trip. You can also check out my flickr page for all the pictures I took and if you want to download a full size picture for a print.

I left the Grand Canyon around 1:30PM and survived the drive back to Phoenix and flight back to PDX airport. It was SO GOOD to be back home among the green grass, trees, and livable temperatures.

I was recently looking for an armband for my iPhone 3G. I found a few on Amazon.com that looked OK. With shipping they were priced from $15 to $30+. Since I wasn’t sure I really wanted one that was a bit more than I wanted to spend.

I then found eforcity.com through a google search and their iPhone 3G armband for the excellent price of FREE! Simply add the BLACK iPhone 3G Armband to your cart, then during checkout enter the code FREEIPHARM for a $9.99 discount. You only pay shipping and handling which for me was $5.99. Your price will vary on this depending on your location and the shipping calculator.

You, as I was, may be wary of this free price but I got my iPhone 3G Black Armband in the mail four days later and it was just as advertised. I haven’t noticed any weird charges on my credit card yet 😉 but I will let you know. Enjoy your armband and happy exercising.

Since upgrading to Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.4 and then buying my iPhone 3G I have been having tons of issues with my work wireless internet connection. Immediately after upgrading to Leopard I could no longer access my work wireless connection. With 10.4 I had no issues with my WIFI connection but with Leopard I had TONS and Ditto with my iPhone 3G.

First off my Laptop & OS X Leopard WIFI Trials:

After upgrading to Leopard I tried to connect to my WEP protected work wireless connection and Airport asked me for a Login and Password. HUH? Login and Password are WPA requirements. WEP is a simple password. I tried all kinds of combinations of passwords with a preceeding # etc etc to no success. I then tried creating my own connection to the router and specified WEP security and still no success. I tried deleting the Airport Network Adapter (FYI: TERRIBLE IDEA) which only caused me hours of pain trying to get it to added back with still no success.

My final solution: Now each time I connect, I open up the Network Preferences pane, click on Assist Me, Select Diagnostics, Click on Default Location, Select my WIFI router name, and then it magically prompts me for my WEP password. Once entered it connects to our work WEP protected access point with no problems. WHY? I have no idea. This is a huge pain and disappointing that Leopard requires this kind of hack to connect to a simple wireless router.

Notes: I had NO problems with Tiger, we regularly connect tons of different computers (we are a tech company after all) all with no problems, I can NOT change the access since this is a corporate network and I have no control or input into this, and Leopard for some reason will still not save the WEP key in my keychain.

Any ideas? They would be greatly appreciated in the comments! My idea is that for some reason OS X is seeing the router as a WPA router instead of WEP. According to the info I can find WEP is still supported and indeed by using the Diagnostics Hack I can connect (as I am now).

Second, My iPhone 3G WIFI Trials

Same network, same issue, no work around. I have not been able to connect to the network at work with my iPhone. I have tried manually configuring it, setting the password with the preceeding # etc etc and no luck. My boss has an iPhone and the same issue so here if someone can come up with a solution for me I might be able to make the necessary changes happen 🙂

Anybody else not able to connect to a WEP enabled WIFI network with their iPhone 3G and know of a solution other than disabling WEP?

Thanks-
Richard

Doing anything productive with a multi page tiff document is difficult. Windows Picture Viewer does a great job at displaying and printing the multiple page tiff but that is where the productivity ends. I had scanned an article using a multi function copy/san/print machine which scans documents to email. This one happend to scan the document to a multiple page tiff. Some quick looking on the interwebs found a few tiff splitting programs. One of which I found for free on download.com and which crashed with no functionality.

Here is my hack for splitting a multiple page tiff into single images. Warning, this is ugly but functional. First off you must have Adobe Acrobat PDF Creator and some kind of image editor.

1) Right Click on the Multi-Page .Tiff Document and Select Convert to Adobe PDF
2) Open the created PDF File.
3) Using the Graphic Select Tool Draw a Square around one of the Pages
4) Select Copy from the Edit Menu or press Control-C (Apple-C on a Mac)
5) Paste this into your graphic editor of choice
6) Rinse and Repeat for the other pages in yoru Multi-Page Tiff

I am not sure why Adobe Acrobat Creator understands Multiple Page Tiffs and Adobe Photoshop doesn’t but this hack at least worked for me. If you know how to get to the extra pages using just Adobe Photoshop or even the CorelDraw suite then let me know.

Recently Lifehacker turned me on to an awesome hulu browser written in one of my favorite platforms Adobe Air. My Media Player works very well and as a great way to watch hulu on the desktop.

For those who haven’t had much exposure to hulu (as I really haven’t had yet) hulu offers free high-quality tv shows and movies streamed over the wire. Hulu was setup by NBC and News Corp (FOX) and is rockign the online video world. The content is pretty extensive and has many popular shows such as The Colbert Report, The Daily Show, and tons of others.

The Windows Media Encoder 9 application available free from Microsoft is a great free application for those needing to encode Windows Media Video (.WMV) videos.

Windows Media Encoder 9 supports many set encoding profiles as well as allowing custom settings and is available in 32 or 64 bit versions. It is pretty limited on input video file formats (avi, asf, mpg) it will encode from but the output is excellent and the application is free.

Microsoft’s newly released Microsoft Expression Encoder 2 is a much more powerful encoding program but alas is not free. They do offer a generous 30 day trial of Expression Encoder 2 so if you have a project you must get done on the cheap give it a try.

I was recently working on a new gallery display using a flash interpretation of the Apple Cover Flow view. The problem I had was the flash movie swf content was displaying infront of the css drop down on the site. The css dropdown was built using divs and the flash content was in a div but it didn’t seem to matter the settings on those divs.

To get the flash to display behind the css drop down menu you just have to set the wmode property to transparent. This setting must be made both in the AC_FL_RunContent call and in the Flash Object or by choosing Transparent Window in the Publish Settings menu in flash.

Firefox Website Down During Version 3 World Record Attempt

Today 6/17/2008 was supposed to be the huge download day for the Firefox web browser’s newest version, 3.0. The only problem has thus far been … their website is DOWN! I can only assume this is from too much interest but no matter it isn’t looking too good for that world record attempt.

UPDATE: Looks like Firefox finally got their act together around 11:30AM PST and were able to get that record with a whopping 8million plus downloads. Congrats Firefox!
